Toni Ichikawa is a friend, a wonderful person, and an incredible farmer who runs The Green Monster Farm on the North Shore of Hawaii. She is going through a very difficult and overwhelming time right now. After last week’s Kona Low storm, another severe storm hit this week, and a State of Emergency was declared due to devastating flooding. For more than four days, she has been without power and indoor water, and many of the roads in and out of Wailua (where she is located) are closed or unsafe. Right now, even basic daily tasks are extremely difficult, and getting supplies or safely leaving the area isn’t possible.
What makes this even more heartbreaking is that Toni has poured her entire heart into building her farm from the ground up. The Green Monster Farm was officially established in May 2024, but its story really began in 2021 when Toni moved to farmland on the North Shore and found a small flock that had been left behind. One Ameraucana hen named Betsy would lay a green egg beside her toolbox every single day — and that simple moment became the beginning of everything.
Today, The Green Monster Farm operates on certified organic land in Mokulēʻia and produces 180 to 200 dozen eggs per week. Toni runs the farm using the principles of Korean Natural Farming, focusing on sustainability, animal health, and working in harmony with the land. She even sources fresh local produce to supplement the hens’ feed, helping reduce waste while supporting the local community.
Now, the storms have made it nearly impossible for her to care for the farm the way she normally does. The stronger chickens are hanging in there, but some of the weaker ones are starting to get sick. Egg production is still steady for now, but Toni can’t get the eggs to customers, and running daily operations without power, water, or safe road access has become incredibly difficult.
Toni has worked tirelessly to build something meaningful and sustainable, and right now she needs help getting through this challenging time. Donations will go directly toward caring for the animals, covering essential needs while utilities are out, and helping her recover from the devastating flooding so she can keep the farm going.
Any amount — big or small — will make a real difference and help Toni get through this and back on her feet. All donations will go directly to Toni and her farm. Thank you so much for your contributions! We appreciate you all.
