As many of you know, our brother and friend Tom Cox recently suffered a heart incident that nearly took his life. Tom collapsed at work and was found without a pulse by a fellow coworker. The coworker immediately began performing CPR and 911 was called. When the EMTs arrived, Tom was still without a pulse. After five attempts, the defibrillator restored Tom’s pulse, but Tom remained unconscious when he arrived at Chandler Regional Medical Hospital’s emergency ward.
Tom spent multiple days in a coma. Thanks to the quick actions of his coworker, extremely fast response from the EMTs, and excellent care from the medical staff at Chandler Regional Medical Center, Tom miraculously regained consciousness. More than one medical staff member volunteered the insight that many of the patients that come to the hospital in Tom’s condition never regain consciousness.
Tom, always a fighter, continued his progress and shortly thereafter, began to breathe on his own. After still more improvement, Tom began to speak weakly and make small arm and leg movements. Tom’s progress continued and Tom was released from Intensive Care to a step-down ward in the hospital to further his recovery where his speech improved and some motor skills returned.
Amazingly, Tom was then released into an affiliated medical rehabilitation hospital where he undergoes daily physical, occupational and speech therapy to prepare him for his return home. Many, many thanks to all who sent their thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. Extra special thanks to those who disrupted their normal lives to visit Tom from near and far to support his recovery effort. The success of Tom’s recovery is due largely in part to your thoughtfulness.
Those who know Tom and wife Carla are familiar with their very generous nature. They frequently offer their home to out of town guests. They invite friends, neighbors and family members to join them in their home for holiday celebrations. We now have the opportunity to repay that freely given generosity.
We’d like to ask all who have been touched by Tom and Carla’s love to help support Tom’s rebound from this recent battle. There will be uncovered medical costs and other unforeseen incident related expenses. There will certainly be lost wages due to Tom’s inability to work for several weeks or more as well as Carla's time lost in caring for him. Any contribution to Tom’s support cause will be gratefully appreciated.
