On November 18, 2021, Tom and Dauna left Eagle Village in Bradenton, FL to travel back home to Ohio in order to spend the holidays with family. Unfortunately, Tom suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while en route and was rushed to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he underwent multiple emergency life saving surgeries.

Tom suffered a series of medical complications over the next several weeks that have hindered his recovery process and he is currently still in the ICU at Shands.

His wife Dauna has been staying in hotels and short-term rental units for the past five weeks as they are nowhere near home and they don’t know anyone in the Gainesville area. Dauna has been at the hospital every day meeting with his medical team and overcoming her fear of elevators so she can stay right by Tom’s side.

Fortunately, Tom and Dauna’s children Jill and Jake, his mother Virginia and sister Amy, and family friends Vera and Patty have been able to travel and support Dauna throughout this process and they have received hundreds of well wishes from caring friends and family near and far.

While we don’t know exactly what to expect over the next few weeks, we do know that Tom has a lengthy recovery ahead of him and that his family is ready to have him home and as healthy as possible!

Those of you that know Tom personally don’t need me to tell you how funny, caring, and generous he is. He has been an active member of the Eagles FOE #1224 in Wilmington, OH for decades, coached little league sports teams, delivers food and supplies to the local homeless shelter, helps friends and community members with chores and around the house tasks, is the first one to jump into action when anyone needs help, and he is truly just about the best kind of friend you could ask for.

He is also the best husband, dad, son, brother, and Pops you could hope to have and we all love him dearly.

The financial support from this gofundme will help cover lodging and travel expenses for Dauna and the kids, healthy meals and “the basics” to help Dauna keep her energy and spirits up, and medical costs that won’t be covered by Tom’s insurance.
