Last week we had to take my 11 year old senior goldendoodle, Toby, to the emergency vet after he collapsed at home. We quickly found out he had a very large tumor with fluid in his abdomen and chest cavity.

His prognosis was very poor. They recommended either further testing or euthanasia. We elected to take my sweet boy home with some pain medicine and an herb to decrease bleeding. He slept between us on the living room floor that night.

The next morning he seemed to be feeling better so we made an appointment for further testing on Tuesday. After bloodwork and imaging, they found a softball-sized splenic tumor. The fluid was almost gone, his bloodwork was near perfect. Surgery was scheduled for the following Monday. We finally got some hope after originally being told he may not make it through the night. Toby wasn’t ready to give up his fight.

As of Monday evening, Toby successfully had his spleen and the attached tumor removed. Biopsies have been taken from the tumor and some liver nodules, which will be back within a week. Although the odds aren’t in our favor, we have high hopes that everything will come back benign.

From the ER to surgery, we never hesitated to do whatever we could for Toby. He’s been by my side since he was 6 weeks old, hopefully all of this will give us a few more years with him.
