My Toby...my heart...the sweetest, most loving dog who just wants to kiss everyone...needs a leg amputation because of osteosarcoma. At 10 years old, we went on long walks together. he's still puppy-like, full of energy, and in excellent shape. This was not supposed to be our story. When Toby began limping, I thought it was an old injury. Medication helped, and I believed we were in the clear. Then the limp suddenly returned, worse than before, with swelling above his paw. I rushed him for X-rays. When I saw the veterinarian's expression, I thought it was a fracture or another injury. Instead, she said, "Osteosarcoma." I am devastated. Making the decision to amputate Toby's leg has been heartbreaking, but I know leaving the cancer untreated would only continue his pain and allow it to spread. A very kind person shared words I'll never forget: "Sometimes it seems unfair what we are called to do in the name of love." Those words didn't make the decision for me. They simply helped me carry it. I know dogs can live beautiful, happy lives on three legs. My job now is to take away his pain and help him live the happy, full life he deserves. But I am simply not financially prepared for it. Over the past four years, I put much of my life on hold caring for my parents through multiple medical emergencies and hospital stays. I had only recently begun rebuilding my life when this happened. Still, there is so much to be thankful for—the kindness, prayers, and support surrounding us. Toby has always been an ambassador for his breed. People who were once afraid of pit bulls would meet him and leave smiling. Walks became pit stops for pets, kisses, and conversations. Once he's healed, it has been placed on my heart to have him certified as a therapy dog. I truly believe it will bring Toby tremendous joy while allowing him to bring comfort, hope, healing, and smiles to others. But first, I have to help him.
