My name is Happy Escobar, also known as the “kid” behind the account ThatKidwiththedog .

My beloved service dog and accidental Internet personality, Tobias, recently took a bad tumble and has torn his CCL and is in need of a very expensive surgery.

This injury has occurred right at the time I was planning to fundraise for his successor.

Tobias is about six years old, the process of getting a new fully trained service dog takes about two to three years . It’s vital that I start the process NOW so his successor will be ready to take over when it’s time for Tobias to retire.

The final cost of his successor is roughly 12k , not figuring in travel expenses, gear costs and other expenses that come with welcoming a new member of the family into your home.

His TPLO surgery is quoted to be between 8-12k …

We have lemonade pet insurance, but because we recently switched from pets best to lemonade , they may not cover ANY cost from Tobias’ leg injury because we were three days away from the 30 day wait period when this injury occurred.

lemonade’s policy specifically states that there is a 30 day wait period for orthopedic care.

if they choose to deny us and claim that this injury was “preexisting” to our coverage, they will not cover any previous bills (meds, X-rays, evaluations) or his surgery.

With my 15 year old retired service dog recently being diagnosed with kidney disease, I have been in and out of the vet with both dogs lately. I have been lucky enough to cover both of my dogs vet costs out of pocket up until now. Without getting funds back from our insurance, my savings are rapidly being depleted and we haven’t even gotten the surgery yet.

My priority is getting Tobias the surgery he needs to be happy and healthy, even if it means he may not be able to work on the future.

With the encouragement of my followers I am going to try to fundraise for both the cost of Tobias’ surgery, and for the cost of his successor so that I can rest assured knowing my future is secure with another life saving medical alert dog at my side, and Tobias is going to be able to enjoy his life whether he retires early or not.

This is no small ask, but in the event funds exceed our goal, it will be donated back to a foundation of my followers choosing (there will be a vote!!) , or perhaps redonated to other teams in need.
