Help start a new social enterprise in The Gambia

The Smiling Food co. is a social enterprise established by Global Hands, a charity that aims to build capacities in The Gambia. This sustainable development initiative aims to provide employment for rural young people in The Gambia, where job opportunities are limited. Based at the Global Hands Development Hub in Manduar, the Smiling Food co. will grow, package and export variety of products including nuts and dried fruit.
The Smiling Food co. concept has been tested, and proven with plans now in place to start production. At this stage, funding is needed to purchase some more equipment so that team can start processing and packaging the produce.
Pupils and staff from Emanuel School (Wandsworth, London) are visiting The Gambia with Global Hands in October 2019 and have the exciting opportunity to help launch production at The Hub.
This fundraising page has been set up to collect funds that will be used to purchase the equipment required for production to start. These funds are being collected by the school and will then be distributed to Global Hands to purchase specific items.
This short documentary (below) directed and produced by James Skinner (Media Coordinator, Emanuel School) features some of the young people who will be benefiting from the project, and highlights some of the issues that they face. It also shows the Manduar Development Hub and the Smiling Food co. initiative.
About Global Hands: Global Hands was registered as a Community Interest Company (company number 07915859) in January 2012 by De Montfort University staff and students with the aim to tackle issues regarding local and global inequality through community engagement.
