Help Mohammad and His Family Escape Gaza: A Nurse's Plea for Safety

Introduction: Dr. Eve Bruce and Mohammad Hawajri - A Call for Urgent Support

Hello, I am Dr. Eve Bruce, a retired surgeon who has dedicated the latter years of my career to serving in war zones with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Today, I am reaching out on behalf of a remarkable colleague, Mohammad Hawajri and his beloved family, a dedicated Palestinian nurse and father who has been with MSF for over seven years, tirelessly providing medical aid in the heart of Gaza under the most perilous conditions.

Mohammad’s commitment to saving lives at Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in the Gaza Strip, has seen him working around the clock amidst relentless conflict. Despite his heroic efforts in the hospital, his personal circumstances are dire. Mohammad’s home was destroyed by airstrikes, leaving him and his family without shelter, relying on the temporary refuge of the MSF office. With Gaza City almost completely in ruins, Mohammad faces an urgent need to secure the safety of his four young children—Katia (11), Ahmed (9), Sulaf (5), and Omer (3).

This fundraiser is crucial. Mohammad has spent years helping countless victims of the conflict, dedicating his life to the service of others even as his own family faces unimaginable peril. Now, he and his family urgently need to escape Gaza to avoid further danger. They face significant obstacles, including obtaining necessary permits and managing the high costs associated with safe passage out of the war zone.

Our goal is to raise funds to help Mohammad and his family leave Gaza and start anew in a place free from the shadow of war. This effort relies on the generosity and support of donors who understand the critical nature of this situation. Mohammad has devoted his life to helping others in their darkest hours; now he is relying on the kindness and support of people like you to safeguard his family’s future.

By contributing to this campaign, you are directly impacting the lives of Mohammad and his children, enabling them to seek safety and a new beginning. Every donation helps remove the barriers to their journey out of Gaza, offering them a chance at stability and peace.

Please join us in supporting Mohammad Hawajri and his family during this critical time. Your generosity can transform their lives and offer them hope amidst the chaos. Let’s stand together to help a hero and his family find safety and peace.

This family has experienced and seen untold horrors. They have lost their home, their money, their school, their mosque - in fact Gaza City is almost completely in ruins.

Please donate what you can and share widely.

Our Story: Before and Now
Before the sky was torn open by the roar of warplanes and the once-familiar streets of Gaza turned to rubble, Mohammad Hawajri’s life was woven into the fabric of his community through bonds of service, family, and hope. As a nurse with Médecins Sans Frontières, each day was a commitment to healing and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. His four children—Katia, Ahmed, Sulaf, and Omer—grew up in a home filled with love, their laughter a melody against the backdrop of a city vibrant with life.

Then the unimaginable happened—war reached into the heart of their existence, shattering their normalcy. The air raids left nothing but shadows of memories where their home once stood. The very foundations of their life were rocked, and with it, the innocence of his children. Schools became relics of the past, and the familiar paths to their mosque were lost in debris.

Now, amidst the ruins and the continuous echoes of conflict, Mohammad stands as both a healer to his people and a protector to his family. The halls of Al-Shifa Hospital, ringing with the cries of the wounded, are a harrowing witness to his dedication as he works tirelessly, often in the face of overwhelming mass casualties. Despite the exhaustion and heartbreak, his resolve never wavers.

This is the story of a man who has devoted his life to mending broken bodies and spirits, now pleading for the world to help piece back together his family's future. This campaign is their beacon of hope—a chance for Mohammad to lift his children from the ashes of Gaza and carry them towards a horizon of safety and peace. It's a call to us, to extend our hands and hearts, to ensure that their 'now' transforms into a future where the laughter of his children can once again rise above the sound of the sea rather than the thunder of bombs.
Your support can rewrite the story of Mohammad and his family. From the frontlines of despair, let's lead them to a new chapter—a story marked not by the scars of war, but by the promise of a peaceful tomorrow.

Challenges We Face
As I move through the corridors of Al-Shifa Hospital, the reality of my daily life unfolds in stark contrast to the world outside these walls. The cries of the wounded, the rush to save lives, and the determination to hold back the tide of despair fill my hours. With every life I touch, there is a silent prayer that this, perhaps, is the one that will tip the scale back towards hope.

My family, my four young children—Katia, Ahmed, Sulaf, and Omer—are the faces that greet me in the quiet moments. The ruin of our home in Gaza, a casualty of airstrikes, is a constant reminder of our vulnerability. The security we once felt within those walls has been replaced by an uncertainty that shadows our every step. The simple joys of family life have been replaced by a daily struggle for survival.

In this place, where I have dedicated myself to healing, the line between the personal and professional has blurred. My children's laughter is too often drowned out by the roar of jets overhead and the shuddering of the ground below. They have become all too familiar with the sights and sounds that no child should ever know. The stark reality of our existence here is that while I can mend the wounds of others, I cannot shield my own family from the trauma that this conflict brings.

The war has not only taken our home; it has stolen the sense of normalcy and the innocence of my children's childhoods. Their schools, our mosque, the very foundations of our community have been shaken or obliterated. Our lives are now defined by the scarcity of the most basic necessities and the constant presence of fear.

This campaign, this call for help, is our beacon in the darkness. It's our hope for safety, for a chance to rebuild what has been lost, for the opportunity to provide my children with a life beyond the reach of war's shadow. The support we seek is more than monetary; it's the promise of a future where the sound of my children's laughter is not overshadowed by the echo of explosions.

In joining us, in supporting us, you stand not just with my family, but with all those in Gaza who cling to the fragile hope for peace. Your help is not just aid; it's a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity that persists, even here, amidst the ruins.

How You Can Help: Our Needs in Detail
To safeguard my family and navigate our way out of Gaza, we require your kindness and support. Here’s how the funds you contribute will be used:
Permits and Legal Paperwork: These are necessary for us to leave legally and safely. They include exit permits and any other bureaucratic necessities that we have to fulfill.
Travel Expenses: From the cost of a safe journey to the border to the eventual flights that will take us to a new country, we need funds to move my family from danger to safety.
Basic Necessities and Transit Housing: During our journey, we'll need to have a roof over our heads and food on our plates. This also covers the essentials to keep my children comfortable and secure as we travel.
Housing in Our New Home: Securing a place to live is critical. We’ll need funds for rent, a deposit, and essential utilities to start anew.
Furnishings and Living Supplies: Once we have a new place to call home, we will need the basics—beds, a table, chairs—so we can live with the dignity everyone deserves.
Sustenance and Clothing: Our new life requires a fresh start, which includes enough groceries to fill the pantry and proper clothing, especially for my children as they grow.
Children’s Education: I am determined to give my children the education they deserve, which means enrollment fees and school supplies.
Healthcare: After the trauma we’ve been through, both physical and mental healthcare will be essential for my family's recovery and well-being.
The journey ahead is long, and the costs are considerable. Yet, each dollar you give us is a step away from turmoil and a step towards stability and hope. Your generosity will be the foundation on which we rebuild our lives.
