IMPALED FOX VET BILL APPEAL

This fox was rescued by the team at the Leicestershire wildlife hospital after becoming impaled on a metal fence.

We received a phone call from a member of the public who had been walking down a street in Leicester and spotted a fox hanging from a metal fence. He soon realised that this fox was impaled through his leg.

The finder was brilliant and quick to take action, phoning our centre for assistance. Amy and Elaine from our team rapidly left the hospital to rescue the fox.

On route to the fox rescue, we contacted the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service as we knew that assistance would be needed in order to cut the fence. They arrived on site before our team, and began setting up the equipment for a swift rescue.

We arrived at the fox rescue and got to work with the fire brigade immediately. Our team secured the fox whilst the fire brigade cut part of the fence away. We wish to thank them so much for their assistance.

We then transported the fox immediately to the fantastic team at Oadby Vets for Pets. Here, they did an incredible job of removing the metal fence which had gone through the muscle of his hind left leg. The team x-rayed the fox to check what damage had been done but thankfully the fence had not pierced anything major and had not caused any broken bones. They then flushed out the wound and stitched it all back up. Thank you so much to all the team!

Later on in the day, we then collected the fox back from the vets and have continued treatment for his recovery. He is receiving antibiotics and pain relief.

The fox has now been in our care for over 4 weeks and is improving daily and it will not be long before he can be moved to a slightly larger enclosure to begin building the strength back up in his muscle.

The vet bill for the fox’s xray, surgery and medication totals around £800 and so we are appealing for funds to help to pay for his care. Any additional funds raised will be used for his food costs, and may be used towards the care of other animals in care at the Leicestershire wildlife hospital.
