Stuart is in his 80's and lives on his own in a dilapidated and collapsing house in a village in Limbe (BCA2), Malawi.
Unlike the UK, Malawi has no welfare or care system for the eldery. Stuart is reliant upon support from neighbours and family members of former employers.
My mother employed Stuart in 1952, following the death of both his parents in a fatal lorry accident. Stuart's support and help was vital as my mother suffered from a chronic illness and was eventually bedridden. He also supported my father Dr S R Ambekar at his local surgery in Blantyre and in Limbe. In 1989, Stuart started work at Newlands residential care home in Limbe and finally retired in 2010.
Stuart's house has gone beyond the point of repair. He lives in a bungalow with an outside toilet and kitchen (which has recently collapsed). The adverse weather conditions and recent heavy rainfall have caused significant damage to the property and we are concerned for his safety.
As an elderly and frail man, Stuart is very vulnerable. He urgently needs a safe and secure place to sleep with basic facilities to keep clean, cook and feed himself.
Stuart's existing house is dangerous and needs demolishing. He needs a new robust property built on the same land which will sustain him for the remainder of his life.
Using a local project manager and build experts we have been able to estimate the new build costs at £8000. This will provide a new property, with running water, internal toilet, kitchen and basic furniture.
Stuart is almost 82, so we are keen to have the house built quickly to improve his quality of life, for his remaining years. Our aim is to start on the 1st September 2019.
