(Español abajo) On July 28, 2021, Humberto ‘Tito’ Luna was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer called Ewing Sarcoma. Approximately 200-250 cases of Ewing Sarcoma are diagnosed annually. I have worked with Tito’s parents for over 5 years; they are an amazing, strong willed couple rooted in family. Read Tito’s story below:

Tito was a normal 17-year-old, exercising and enjoying his friends and family and their travels. Over the last few months, however, Tito started having lower back pain localized on one side of his pelvis. In March, all Tito had was a little bump on his upper pelvis, about the size of a quarter. This bump came and went as did the soreness. Upon going to the doctor’s office for his annual physical in May, the doctor thought this was a type of strain due to exercise. At that time, Tito weighed about 180 pounds. Tito is tall for 17, at 6’3”. In June, Tito and family took a vacation. One morning, the pain was so bad he couldn’t get out of bed. The family sought out a doctor there. This doctor said to see his primary immediately when they went back, but there was not much he could do but manage the pain.

When the family returned from vacation, they once again sought out their doctor. When Tito showed them his back, the lump was completely gone. The swelling and the lump came and went. Sometimes, Tito felt just fine and had no immobility issues. The doctor suggested physical therapy which the family started along with an anti-inflammatory schedule. The physical therapy didn’t work. In fact, it irritated it. They went back to the doctor again. They performed x-rays and blood counts. Nothing showed. The doctor said it was early arthritis. They increased the ibuprofen dose for inflammation.

A short 4 days later, Tito’s mom, Lorena, noticed his face was extremely thin; he looked bony and very sick after physical therapy that day. They went home; the bump was huge on his pelvis. Instead of going to the doctor immediately, Tito said he’d wait until the follow up appointment that was already scheduled for the next day. That follow up revealed that Tito had lost 25 pounds since his physical. The doctor’s completed another set of x-rays and said that maybe it was an abscess. They also performed a CT scan. The CT scan showed that the mass was cancer. The CT also showed that the cancer was all over in his pelvic bones. Then, the biopsy confirmed the type of cancer to be Ewing Sarcoma. Tito’s next CT scan revealed that that cancer had already spread through his pelvis, ribs, cartilage, sternum, and his skull.

This is just the beginning for the Luna family. Tito will undergo 6 months of intensive chemo. He will also have to stay hospitalized for a whole month to receive radiation. He was supposed to start his senior year IN school this September; instead, he schools online.

Any money raised will go towards the medical bills and transportation to and from all his doctor’s appointments which are at the Children’s Hospital as well as the Mayo Clinic. Tito’s parents, Humberto and Lorena, and his two sisters, are obviously distraught. They are staying with him throughout his treatments and travel. The family appeals to all good hearts to help Tito beat this cancer; pray for them. Consider donating so the family can focus on family instead of finances. They ask to give him a chance to finish growing up, finish school, and be an awesome adult as productive as his parents.

Cuando la familia regresó de las vacaciones, volvió a buscar a su médico. Cuando Tito les mostró la espalda, el bulto había desaparecido por completo. La hinchazón y el bulto iban y venían. A veces, Tito se sentía bien y no tenía problemas de inmovilidad. El médico sugirió fisioterapia que la familia inició junto con un programa antiinflamatorio. La fisioterapia no funcionó. De hecho, lo irritaba. Volvieron al médico de nuevo. Realizaron radiografías y recuentos sanguíneos. No se mostró nada. El médico dijo que era artritis temprana. Aumentaron la dosis de ibuprofeno para la inflamación.

Unos 4 días después, la mamá de Tito, Lorena, notó que su rostro estaba extremadamente delgado; se veía huesudo y muy enfermo después de la fisioterapia ese día. Se fueron a casa; el bulto era enorme en su pelvis. En lugar de ir al médico de inmediato, Tito dijo que esperaría hasta la cita de seguimiento que ya estaba programada para el día siguiente. Ese seguimiento reveló que Tito había perdido 25 libras desde su examen físico. El médico completó otra serie de radiografías y dijo que tal vez era un absceso. También realizaron una tomografía computarizada (CT Scan). La tomografía computarizada mostró que la masa era cáncer. La tomografía computarizada también mostró que el cáncer había terminado en sus huesos pélvicos. Luego, la biopsia confirmó que el tipo de cáncer era el sarcoma de Ewing. La siguiente tomografía computarizada de Tito reveló que el cáncer ya se había extendido a través de la pelvis, las costillas, el cartílago, el esternón y el cráneo.

Este es solo el comienzo para la familia Luna. Tito se someterá a 6 meses de quimioterapia intensiva. También tendrá que permanecer hospitalizado durante todo un mes para recibir radiación. Se suponía que debía comenzar su último año en la escuela este mes de septiembre; en su lugar, educa en línea.

Todo el dinero recaudado se destinará a las facturas médicas y el transporte hacia y desde todas las citas con el médico que se encuentran en el Hospital de Niños y en la Clínica Mayo.
