UPDATES:

Tita Annie passed away. My wife Janet went to the Philippines to be with her. We thank you all for all the kindness and financial support. The money that we got will go to the medical bills and the funeral.

About Tita Annie:

Juanita “Tita Annie” Untalan or Nanay as I address her is my loving mother-in-law. She is my wife’s mother who was widowed since 2001. She raised her two children alone, my wife, Janet and Ella. She was a hardworking mother who made sure that her kids finished their education. She is always there for Janet and she visited us in Canada when our second and third children were born. Unfortunately, her first daughter, Ella has a disability and that is why she cannot join us permanently in Canada even if we want to sponsor her. Even at her age, she never stops taking care of Ella. She just celebrated her 75th birthday recently. She is very passionate about her grandchildren; my 3 kids and she would always keep in touch with them online.

What happened:

She is not physically great for 5 years now. Because of her condition, she comes in and out of the hospital. Recently, she just suffered aneurysm and currently fighting pneumonia. She was rushed to the hospital on August 15, 2020 at the ICU of Perpetual Help Medical Center Las Pinas Philippines. As of the moment, she is more asleep because of the infection. She is currently being given stroke/aneurysm medications and antibiotics for the pneumonia with ventilator. The doctor said that she has been fighting to live and because she’s doing that it is even harder for us. We want to support her financially with this fight.

To date, since Janet is the only family member that can finance her mother, we have spent over $13,972 (mostly our savings) for the medication and hospital bills. We have been spending a lot of money as well for the past 5 years for her maintenance and check ups. There was an emergency medical procedure that was already done worth $3,000 to release the pressure on her brain, as this was already life threatening, aside from the aneurysm that happened. Any money we have– outside of our mortgage, utilities, payment, and other bills – will go directly to Tita Annie right now. Also, Tita Annie’s savings are almost gone. The cost of medication in the Philippines is too much as we all know. Janet and I will also carry the responsibility of her sister financially very soon.

We are in debt and we will be in ever bigger debt because of hospital bills that are piling up. On top of this, Janet is very emotionally stressed. Janet and I have been working hard in Canada since we came here in 2007 for both of our parents and now with our 3 kids. We want to save her life. We want her to live and I know you understand as this is what we always wanted for our parents.

Recommended treatment:

Her brain is stable but can rupture anytime as it is still unsecure. A surgery is needed in order to secure Tita Annie’s aneurysm and it would cost roughly $20,000 and that doesn’t include the after care and the current hospital bills that are increasing every day. As I’m writing this, it is already at $11,000.

This is one of the hardest things I’ve done. Writing about this experience on social media and letting people know what we have been going through is difficult for me. I am the provider of the family and I have to make sure that I have money whenever they need me. I have to forget my pride and admit that I need help. The truth is, I’ve been working hard in Canada and we are still experiencing money problems and might not be able to save Tita Annie’s life. Going to gofundme is something I would not have done right away. I know that everybody is carrying financial problems in one way or another, but I realize that someone’s life is at stake, so I swallowed my pride. Her daughters need her and my children.

My contribution:

We will be using the money we have on our line of credit (and credit cards if need be) to help fund this surgery. I want to contribute what I can, but we also have a difficult decision to make in managing our already struggling funds.

If you have the capacity to contribute to this surgery and medications cost, I would be extremely grateful.  Even sharing it with your social media network or friends (through personal messages) may be a big help. Once everything is better, we can promise a life of ongoing dedication to others in return.

How soon we need the funds:

We want to do the surgery as soon as Tita Annie can be able to.

How these funds will help Tita Annie:

All the money that we will receive will go directly to Tita Annie’s surgery cost and medications.

How these funds will be distributed:

My wife, Janet Masalonga, has agreed to accept and hold all funds in a separate medical account that has been created. These funds will then be used to pay for the surgery and medications cost for Tita Annie.

Thank you and I am sorry we are in this situation of asking for your help. I know this is difficult due to Covid19 and it is more difficult for us. But any amount is huge for us and it will go a long way.

The love that you’ve been showing our family is more than enough. My wife’s situation especially that she cannot go to the Philippines is very difficult. This is an experience I would not wish on anyone. Thank you again and god bless you.
