We are a group of Tisha's friends and family trying to help an amazing human, mother, and business woman in her fight against cancer.
Tisha is a force to be reckoned with; stylish, savvy, smart she is an artist through and through. More importantly, Tisha is a healer and giver supporting peers and her community by always giving back. She is a loving and loyal friend, always there to support her friends' ventures and dreams. We are here to support hers.
Since becoming a hairstylist, Tisha has honed her skills and worked hard toward her goal of owning her own salon. 2018 provided the opportunity to begin that journey of opening Bruja Salon.
As woman of color, owning her own business is a way to empower herself and determine her own success. At Bruja Salon, she provides a space to be unapologetically yourself, the same way she lives her life.
In mid January 2019, on the eve of opening her own salon Tisha was diagnosed with stage 2 Primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMBCL), a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Just a month prior in December, while furiously working to finish painting and setting up her new business, she began having difficulty breathing. After a handful of doctor visits, a biopsy confirmed she had a cancerous tumor in her lung. Further testing revealed a second tumor in her nasal cavity. Almost immediately, her doctors had her fitted for a port and she was starting her in-patient chemo treatments.
Tisha's treatment schedule requires a five day hospital stay every 3 weeks for the next 4-5 months. The intensity of her treatments combined with compromised immunity and much needed rest, limits her ability to work behind the chair. With her husband David in graduate school and working part time, Tisha has been her family's primary earner. In addition they have been raising a beautiful baby boy, Thaddy, who just turned 1 in the middle of her diagnosis.
