Jay and I are having a lot of difficulty maintaining our jobs and community responsibilities without a reliable car to get us to all the places we need to be.

We are teachers and community organizers. Jay works as a preschool teacher and a community facilitator. And I, Timothy, teach eclectic spirituality development classes and psychic guidance counseling for a living. I work primarily at a healing center in Rio Rancho.

At the end of last September, Jay was driving down a small cross street and our car was hit by a motorist speeding on the thoroughfare that’s close by where we live. No one was injured, thank goodness; however, the accident totaled our one and only car. We only carried collision insurance—the car had already depreciated so much in value it was not cost-efficient to have more coverage. So very suddenly, Jay and I are managing without a car.

We both make a modest income and with our insurance, a significant increase in rent, and groceries continuing to rise, we are not in the budget to get a new car on our own for quite some time.

We are both grateful for the generous people that have been giving us rides, but nevertheless, we are hoping that we do not have to rely as much on our friends and family with having a new used car.

Besides, there are multitudes of problems working with other people’s schedules and dealing with an unreliable bus service. By bus, it takes Jay over two hours to and from work most weekdays with a lot of walking in between buses, and in this summer heat, it can be hazardous to his health; with a car, it was under 30 minutes each way. For me, it’s even more complicated to get to work without driving a car. My job in Rio Rancho takes me two and a half hours by two buses and then an Uber for the last ten miles, yet only 45 minutes directly by car—and this is just a one-way trip. And Uber and cab services are very expensive and time-consuming as well.
