Help Tim Kohn - Stroke Victim
Donation protected
We need your help. Our home needs to become accessible for a wheelchair and we require a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
Tim had a Hemorrhagic Stroke which has brought our world to a terrifying halt!
Tim is a husband, father of 3 sons, grandfather, and a foster dad. As a Red Seal Automotive Technician, who has been the Service Manager at an independent Shop in Calgary for the last 19 years. Tim always took pride in taking care of his customers. In the past Tim volunteered in his community. We always had our door open for any of our youth who needed us.
On May 12, 2018 at the age of 56, Tim Kohn had a Hemorrhagic Stroke (that’s a big one). A few days later the brain was still swelling when it was determined that we were losing Tim and there was an emergency Decompressive Craniectomy performed to save Tim’s life at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. This procedure allows the brain room to swell/expand without being squeezed. The bone flap was replaced once the swelling was reduced at the end of October 2018. In the summer of 2018, Tim was in inpatient rehabilitation at the CareWest Fanning Centre for Stroke in Calgary. November 5/18 Tim moved to HalVar Jonson Brain Injury Centre in Ponoka, Alberta for extensive inpatient rehabilitation. This wonderful facility is 2.5 hours (210 klms) north of Tim’s family home in Calgary. This distance makes it very difficult for his children and grandchildren to visit.
The Hemorrhagic Stroke has left Tim paralyzed on his left side. Tim requires a wheelchair to move around, assistance moving in an out of the wheelchair. Adaptative accessories to allow for some independence, e.g.: rocker knife to cut food with one hand, anti-slip mates to write without having the paper move, etc.
We live in an older home that has narrow doors, small rooms and several steps to the front door. A ramp or lift is required to allow Tim access to his home. The bathroom is unable to accommodate a wheelchair, we require a barrier free shower, etc.
Our 6’2” Tim can no longer reach a cup or plate on the bottom shelf of the upper cupboards, nor can he easily reach items in the lower cupboards due to barriers and restrictive movement.
Our family has been through a lot these past few years. We buried our youngest son of 25 years in 2014 from a workplace fatality trying to save his childhood friend. Tim was unable to attend one of our son’s wedding this summer and missed the birth of our youngest grandson in May. I spent the best part of three years unable to work due to grief. Tim has always been our rock and financial provider. Now I am trying to figure out how I can bring my husband home to live with me in our home on my income as a temp now. Turning our family home into an accessible home will continue to allow us to enjoy our children and grandchild which is something we desperately need. A wheelchair accessible vehicle would allow easier access to medical appointments, ongoing outpatient therapy once Tim returns home and save my back from having to lift the wheelchair in and out of my little Kia Rio which is also too small for me to assist a 6’2” man in and out of.
Anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
