A dear colleague and his family have faced displacement in Sudan for the second time since the war erupted in April 2023 — the first time from Khartoum and the second from Sennar last week. Tigani is the sole provider for his wife and their three children, all under the age of 10, as well as his sister and her two teenage children. Both times they fled with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a few important documents. They left Sennar after a direct attack by militiamen and are now in Gedaref, which is also under threat of militia attack.

When I spoke to Tigani shortly after they reached Gedaref, he broke down over the phone, recalling "the fear in my son's eyes during the attack..." I've known Tigani for nearly nine years; a man who tirelessly worked labor-intensive jobs to make ends meet, who radiates nobility in everything he does. Almost every conversation we've had revolved around his children, because they are his entire world. He came to me a few years ago for advice on good and affordable English schools in Khartoum, because he himself does not speak English and wanted a better future for his children. Tigani is the kind of man who, once safe, would move mountains to help others. He deserves a life of security and dignity, and his children deserve a hopeful future.

I am discussing with friends and colleagues different ways to get him and his family to safety out of Sudan as soon as possible. With things on the ground moving so quickly and safe escape routes narrowing, it's a logistical nightmare. Nevertheless, our resolve is unwavering: he will make it.

I ask you to help them. Any donation, no matter how small, would make a world of difference. If you could forgo a simple indulgence, like a night out, and donate here instead, you will truly be choosing to change the trajectory of an entire family. If you are unable to donate, then sharing this would be a huge help.

The amount raised will go toward immediate relief — food and drink, shelter, transportation costs, including flights and visas, and support until they can settle in a new country.

Ayuda a Tigani y su familia a salir de la guerra en Sudán

Un compañero muy querido, Tigani, y su familia han sido desplazados en Sudán por segunda vez desde que comenzó la guerra en abril de 2023, la primera vez desde Jartum y la segunda desde Sennar la semana pasada. Es responsable de su esposa y sus tres hijos, todos menores de 10 años, así como de su hermana y sus dos hijos adolescentes. En ambas ocasiones se fueron sin nada más que la ropa que llevaban puesta y algunos documentos importantes. Huyeron de Sennar después de haber sido atacados directamente por milicianos y actualmente se encuentran en el estado oriental de Gedaref, también bajo amenaza de ataque de la milicia.

Hablé con él hace unos días, después de su huida a Gedaref. Se derrumbó por teléfono al recordar “la mirada en los ojos de mi hijo cuando nos atacaron…”. Tigani es un hombre que conozco desde hace casi nueve años. Siempre trabajaba a destajo sin parar, demostrando una nobleza y dignidad que son realmente encomiables. Su vida gira en torno a sus hijos, siempre hablando de ellos con amor y esperanza. Acudió a mí hace unos años para pedirme consejo sobre escuelas de inglés buenas y asequibles en Jartum, ya que él mismo no habla el idioma y quería un futuro mejor para sus hijos. Es un hombre que, una vez a salvo, haría todo lo posible para ayudar a otros a encontrar seguridad, incluso a costa de sus propios medios. Tigani y su familia merecen una vida digna y segura. Sus hijos merecen un futuro lleno de oportunidades.

Estoy viendo con amigos y colegas diferents maneras de llevarlos a un lugar seguro fuera de Sudán lo antes posible. Como las cosas en el terreno avanzan tan rápido y las vías de escape seguras se están agotando, se trata de una pesadilla logística. No obstante, estamos decididos y él lo logrará.

Te pido que les ayudes. Si puedes aportar cualquier cantidad, por pequeña que sea, sería de gran ayuda. Si un día, en lugar de irte de fiesta o a cenar a un restaurante, aportas esa cantidad en forma de donación, realmente estarás eligiendo cambiarle el futuro a toda una familia. Incluso en caso de no poder contribuir, tan solo compartir este mensaje significaría mucho.

La cantidad recaudada se destinaría a ayuda inmediata (comida y bebida), alojamiento y gastos de transporte, incluidos billetes de avión, costes de visado y asistencia de manutención hasta que la familia pueda reasentarse en un nuevo país.
