Help Threshold Studios Recover From Ida

Donation protected
Hi everybody, it’s James Walsh from Threshold Studios here in Hell’s Kitchen in NYC.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our studio was completely underwater last week during the hurricane Ida flooding event in NYC. The attached video is really hard to watch- I haven’t even gotten through it yet- and that wasn’t even the half of it. Its impossible to document a disaster in real time. At a certain point I just told our chief engineer Derek, who was doing everything he could to salvage and document whatever he could reach- to grab his favorite mic and just get out before he got hurt- which he did and thankfully he is ok which is the real blessing in all of this.

We were hit from all sides; 18 inches came up through the foundation of the building while the water rained down above us from the ceiling, sandwiching everything in a blanket of water.

The facility itself is completely wrecked, the ceilings are falling down and much of the gear has been compromised.

As many of you might know, I handbuilt the studio myself over 25 years ago in the rehearsal room footprint of our dear departed friend Jeff Buckley. Once the studio was built we tuned the speakers in the room room to Jeff’s album Grace and sonically we never looked back.

One of the first bands we worked with were The Strokes which helped us get a footing -and then over the course of the next 25 years we’ve worked with tens of thousands of musicians, bands, artists, actors, dancers, singers, TV shows, movies, and everything in between.

Our studio has hosted some incredible artists from Cyndi Lauper to Mick Fleetwood to Smokey Robinson to my dear friend the legendary Ron Carter, to Interpol and Foreigner. All the great broadway shows and actors and actresses- Too many to mention in such a short bio.

Much of our time has also been spent working with nonprofit groups like Road Recovery doing biweekly mentorship support programming for at risk youth for over a decade. A major part of the Threshold Studios mission has always been to work within the local community- including many local schools, with the city and state, and countless other nonprofits from MusiCares, to GLAAD to Tunnels to Towers.

Although this facility is not going to be able to be salvaged, we’re moving on to a new location in Hell’s Kitchen and plan to spend another 25 years helping young artists develop and working with our established legacy clients. It’s a bittersweet moment as we look to the future and reflect thankfully for the past.

Floodwaters are tricky and unfortunately insurance policies DO NOT and WILL NOT be able to accurately offset the losses, which are great.

I’m used to being the one helping others, so it’s not easy for me to ask for help when I know so many have suffered, but if you can find it in your heart to financially support us in this time of need we promise to continue giving back for another 25 years.

Any funds donated to this effort will go toward trying to repair and rebuild the gear that was damaged, building out a new facility, and keeping our chief engineer Derek employed while we are unable to work, and other expenses.

I’m sure I could’ve worded this better, but we’ve been up for five days in a salvage operation in some of the grossest conditions we’ve ever experienced.

Thank you for your consideration and I wish you all the best.

Much love,
James Walsh, Owner/ Operator, Executive Producer
