Help Thornton's Recovery Journey

Dear friends, family, and caring strangers,

Many of you know and love our brother, Thornton—he is a beloved son, sibling, warm friend to many, and talented chef who works at our family owned cafe, Orchard Coffee in Waynesville, North Carolina. Two months ago on February 14th, our world turned upside down when Thornton suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He was found unconscious, with no breathing or heartbeat. CPR was started right away, and first responders rushed him to Mission Hospital.

Doctors warned us that the first 72 hours in the ICU would be critical. We anxiously watched and prayed as he battled for his life. Thanks to prompt medical care and countless prayers, Thornton’s vital signs stabilized; he began breathing largely on his own. However, he still hasn’t fully woken up, and there is no clear timeline for when—or how—he will regain consciousness. Each day since, we have been by his bedside, talking to him, holding his hand, and hoping for a miracle. Some friends in the community have been able to visit, to read to him, and keep him company. For this we are grateful.

Throughout this ordeal, we’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support that so many people have shown our family. We've been blessed with meals, lodging, and many other kindnesses. Your messages, prayers, and shared memories of Thornton give us hope in our dark moments.

As the months stretch on, we are preparing to pay for Thornton's continued care. We want to ensure that he receives the best medical attention and rehabilitation possible. That’s why we are humbly asking for your help. Any contribution you can make—no matter how small—will go toward Thornton’s medical needs, rehabilitation costs, and anything else that he might need during this critical time. If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this page and keeping Thornton in your thoughts and prayers.

We believe in Thornton’s fighting spirit, and we’re holding onto hope that he will overcome the challenges ahead. Thornton has moved to a new recovery and rehabilitation facility in Asheville, but our goal is to get him longer term care in Atlanta. The Atlanta care center is one of the best in the country, and also close enough that our family will be able to be with him at every step of his present journey. Thank you for standing with us, for your generosity, and for lifting us up in your prayers while we work toward Thornton's recovery.

With gratitude and hope,
The Tice Family
