I adopted Thor when he was just 14 weeks old, and from the very beginning, he needed extra care. My ex and I broke up, and I took Thor because he had medical issues that weren’t being addressed. He was extremely sick when I got him, and it took a year of dedication to get him healthy again. In 2017, I was hospitalized and could no longer care for him, so I had to give him back to my ex. We had an agreement about his care, but it was never followed, and my ex moved away with him. After four years of not seeing Thor, I finally got him back earlier this year because, once again, my ex didn’t want to deal with his medical issues and wasn’t taking proper care of him.

Since then, I’ve signed Thor up for insurance to help with his ongoing medical needs, which has been a significant expense each month. My ex and I were supposed to coparent and split costs, but he tried to use Thor to extort me. When I refused his advances, he tried to take Thor back. Thor is my soul dog, and seeing the change in him from when I first got him back to now is remarkable. He was a shell of the dog he used to be, and it seemed like no one played with him or gave him the attention or care he needed. Now, he’s finally back to his old self, but at 13 years old, I know he doesn’t have much time left. It breaks my heart to see him wanting to play so badly, but his body just can’t keep up.
