Hi/Hola (en castellano abajo), I'm Amanda, I live in Peru and I'm fundraising to help my little nephew Thomasito get the cochlear implant that he needs. Last year, when Thomas was 2 years old, his parents discovered that he was almost completely deaf. Since he is so young and was responding very cleverly, it was difficult to figure out what was happening, but they took him for cognition and hearing tests and discovered that he could not hear.

Thomas was born with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (deafness). For his recovery and chance at fully communicating in life, he needs cochlear implants in both ears. His parents worked hard and arranged the payment for the first half of his first implant in his right ear a few months ago, basically selling everything they had. He has one implant now and they are working to pay for their debt but, he still needs the implant for his left ear.

At his young age, with the help of modern implants, he can have a very good chance of learning to speak normally and have a fully functional life.

The first implant cost 21.500USD, plus travel and therapy expenses, and has helped him greatly. He is receiving constant speech therapy but he really needs the other implant as soon as possible to give him the best opportunity in life.

In Peru, most specialized medical services, especially modern options such as the cochlear implants, are all private, and very costly. The young, working family lives in the city of Arequipa and the surgeries are done in the capital, in Lima.

Kelly, Thomasitos' mother, is a licensed language therapist and is working hard to save money and to be sure that her son is getting the best therapies from her colleagues. Thomas' father, Gustavo works as a leather artisan, handyman and worked as a taxi driver, but they sold their car to help pay for Thomas' first implant. Abril, his sister who is 6 years old, does everything to help integrate Thomas into her day! They all know that it is important to get this second implant as soon as possible so that he can develop full speech.

Thomas wants to hear all of the the wonderful sounds of this world, and to be able to share that with everyone .

The cost of one implant in Peru is 21,500USD. this does not include therapies and travel and accommodation expenses to go for the surgery in Lima, Peru.

Para recuperarse y tener la oportunidad de comunicarse plenamente en la vida, necesita implantes cocleares en ambos oídos. Sus padres trabajaron duro y arreglaron el pago de la primera mitad de su primer implante en el oído derecho hace unos meses, básicamente vendiendo todo lo que tenían. Ahora tiene un implante y están trabajando para pagar su deuda, pero todavía necesita el implante para su oreja izquierda.

A su corta edad, con la ayuda de implantes modernos, puede tener muchas posibilidades de aprender a hablar normalmente y tener una vida plenamente funcional.

El primer implante costó 21.500 dólares, más gastos de viaje y terapia, y le ha ayudado mucho. Está recibiendo terapia de lenguaje constante pero realmente necesita el otro implante lo antes posible para darle la mejor oportunidad en la vida.

En Perú, la mayoría de los servicios médicos especializados, especialmente las opciones modernas como los implantes cocleares, son todos privados y muy costosos. La joven familia trabajadora vive en la ciudad de Arequipa y las cirugías se realizan en la capital, Lima.
