Help Thomas and Family After Accident
Donation protected
Wednesday, February 26, my husband and I were in a motorcycle accident on the corner of Airline and Ben Wilson St. in Victoria, TX. The person who hit us was pulling out of a restaurant parking lot, not paying attention to oncoming traffic. She pulled out into our lane while being distracted by looking for a cigarette. Because of this careless decision, she ended up pulling out in front of us, hitting us while we were going 30 mph. I heard my husband yell at her before the boom. I am so blessed that my husband is an experienced rider, and blessed he taught me what to do if something like this ever happened. My husband made sure to put all his weight against me, so I didn't go flying off the motorcycle, as well as put his left side of his body between me and the car, taking the full impact. He kept the bike up as long as possible to avoid the bike landing on me when it fell over. Because of what he has taught me, I did my best to protect my head and face. My head did make an impact with the road, leaving me with a small hole on the left side of my forehead. It could have been a lot worse had I not protected myself. My other injuries are still affecting me now, which is the inability to breathe normally because my chest took a mean impact as well as my right arm. The doctor said it would be a while before that pain goes away.
Thomas's injuries were more severe. He had to be airlifted to San Antonio for emergency surgery. The nurses at Citizens were absolutely amazing and allowed us to see each other while they were getting him prepped for his flight to San Antonio. My husband doesn't cry, but seeing the pain in his eyes and knowing we were being separated was killing both of us. I cried so much because I couldn't go with him. He told me before he left, "Remember how I told you I would die for you and protect you with my life? I tried my best to keep you safe." We are both alive because of his experience as a biker. This could have killed us. Not once did she ask if we were okay or say sorry.
My husband's left hip was completely dislocated and the cup of his hip bone is fractured. He will not be able to do any weight-bearing activities on his left hip for 6 weeks, meaning he will not be able to work. The surgery he had was to pop his hip back into place and used a pin through the leg and bones to keep his leg straight and hip in place. As for myself, due to the impact my chest took, I am unable to work because I'm unable to use my right arm or put weight on it (I work as a caregiver for the elderly).
We have 5 kids here at home who depend on us, and this accident has taken everything away from us financially. We hate asking for help but at this point we have no other option. To anyone who can help, thank you. If you cannot, we completely understand. A prayer for healing would be beyond helpful, and thank you for taking the time to pray for us.
