Let me tell you my story.
I am a 65 year old retired preschool teacher. About 17 years ago I inherited a condo from my parents, mortgage paid. Rather than sell it, I decided to keep it and move in, paying the condo fees and property taxes in lieu of rent. This way, not only would I have be able to keep our home, I would have a safe haven for my cognitively disabled sister should something disrupt her section 8 housing.
This worked well while I was working steadily, but then life happened. Covid struck at the same time as expensive repairs were needed for my furnace and car. My work was greatly reduced and my savings, which was never much, was used up. Just as I began to recover from that upset, my diabetes worsened and between the neuropathy and just normal aging, I realized I would no longer be able to provide the care that young children require. In fact, the pain in my feet and legs have made it impossible for me to do most jobs. I was forced to retire.
Here’s the problem
While I was working I could pay most of my bills, including my property taxes, but for the past three years that I’ve been on social security I have not. Now the State is about to put a lien on the condo in preparation of foreclosure because I’m three years in arrears in paying my property tax. I don’t have enough time or money to sell my property or file bankruptcy before the lien takes place. I don’t make enough to afford today’s rent. Basically, in a little over three months I will be homeless.
What I’m asking
I’m trying to raise $5000 in order to pay one year of the past taxes plus penalties. This will give me a year to sell my condo and work to find affordable housing. This could literally keep me off the streets and maybe save my life.
Please help by giving what you can and by sharing this with others. I know times are hard and everyone knows someone who needs help but I would appreciate anything I get. If I don’t raise enough for the taxes, the money will go to help me move.
Thank You!
