The Lawrence Times is launching to provide news coverage of the issues that matter to this community, to give a voice to the voiceless, to hold those in power accountable and to be held accountable ourselves. We aim to reflect this community’s values, including equity, transparency and true justice. And we simply want to offer a choice for local news.
Who is The Lawrence Times? Right now, it’s Mackenzie Clark, former reporter for the local newspaper of record, working to make this happen from my bedroom-office. So who’s “we”? The hundreds of people who have already spoken up and said that they want — and need — to see this happen.
We know everyone’s hurting for money — we are, too, and we understand that most people aren’t able to donate much right now. Our plan is to keep overhead extremely low by sticking to online-only publishing for the foreseeable future.
! TOP PRIORITY ! — If we can raise enough in the next 36 hours, we can upgrade to a fancy Wordpress for $150 instead of $300!
Other big needs we have right now: a good Canon lens (~$2,300 with tax, unless we find one refurbished, and we will definitely try!) and, soon, a few other online services and odds and ends.
What we have going on behind the scenes:
• Setting up the website (thanks to a very generous donor, we already have a domain name!)
• Bringing together a community advisory board
• Seeking community input
• Constantly brainstorming story ideas
• Reaching out to pros who actually know what they’re doing (hence why we’re trying to raise money now)
Please contribute what you can if you can, and please consider donating anonymously. We don’t want anyone to get the impression that we’re being more favorable toward someone in our news coverage because they donated to help us launch. We appreciate every penny, and we sincerely hope that someday we’ll be able to pay it forward.
If you have any questions, please get in touch!
Thank you, Lawrence. Your immediate support has made this so much more exciting and so much less scary. We can make this happen!
