Help Suheir and Her Daughters Rebuild Their Lives

My name is Suheir Abusalim, and I am reaching out with deep humility and hope for support as I try to rebuild a safe and stable life for myself and my two daughters here in the United States.

Who We Are

I was born and raised in Gaza, Palestine. I earned my degree in Nursing from Al Azar University in 2009 and worked for many years at Al Quds Hospital, caring for patients in the emergency room and operating rooms. In 2023, I pursued advanced nursing training with the hope of advancing my career, but the intensified bombings in Gaza forced the program to shut down.

I have two daughters. My youngest, Tala, was born with severe congenital deformities. She was born without the bottom part of her left leg, her right leg is curved and needs a brace, her toes are fused, and her fingers are connected and need surgeries. From an early age, she required complex surgeries not available in Gaza. International doctors helped her undergo several procedures, including finger separation and bone surgeries, but she still needs ongoing operations every year. Tala currently uses a wheelchair and a prosthetic leg, and her medical journey will require many more surgeries as she grows.

Thanks to Shriners Hospital, Tala was finally medically evacuated to the U.S. in 2025, where she has already undergone two major surgeries, with additional procedures scheduled in the future. My older daughter, Mera, has also endured trauma and displacement but continues to stand bravely beside her sister.

Our Losses

In addition to the trauma of displacement, our family lost everything we owned when our apartment building was bombed and completely destroyed in Gaza City. Every possession, every memory, and every piece of stability was reduced to rubble. We left with nothing but the clothes we were wearing.

We cannot return to Gaza. The ongoing genocide has wiped out hospitals, schools, and essential services. For Tala, going back would be life-threatening—her specialized surgeries and follow-up care no longer exist there, and without them, she cannot survive or live a functional life.

Why We Need Support

Our journey has been marked by loss, displacement, and survival. I witnessed firsthand the siege of Al Quds Hospital in 2023, where I worked while caring for displaced families under life-threatening conditions. I survived evacuations under live fire, constant displacement between cities, and the heartbreak of losing colleagues to bombings.

Today, we are finally safe in the U.S., but we face overwhelming challenges as we start over. We have left behind everything—our home, belongings, and support network. My husband remains unable to provide due to his trauma and inability to leave Gaza, and the responsibility to rebuild now falls on me as I also care for my daughters.

Our Hope for the Future

I am determined to rebuild a life of safety, dignity, and opportunity for my children. My dream is to continue my work as a nurse in the U.S., serving others as I have always done, while ensuring my daughters have access to education, medical care, and a future free from fear.
