The difference you can make
Hello, my name is Alex J. Hart. I am an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, a small reservation in northern Minnesota, and am currently in my third year of medical school. I plan to become a primary care physician and am committed to working to improve health in our Native communities. In order to achieve that goal, I need your help to stay in school and keep a roof over my head. I am struggling to finance my education. As a full-time medical student, I have no income. Though I've worked very hard to get to where I am now and have full support from faculty to continue my education, I am in desperate need of additional funding to survive this journey through medical school.
I have a loving and supportive family of modest means. They support me to the best of their ability but we are spread thin. I try my best to make the most of their love, their support, their sacrifice. We were woefully underprepared for the challenges of pursuing higher education but my dream is to continue my medical training so that I can give the best of me back to my community. Please help us. My debts from before medical school have fallen into default, making applying for rental spaces very difficult. No one in my family is in a financial position to serve as a co-signer. My credit challenges are making rental searching a significant burden. I’ve even looked at bankruptcy. The financial stress I am facing has made me question if I should continue in medicine, but after talking with mentors and my family, it has become clear that I am where I belong. I want to continue in my path as a Native doctor, knowing there are very few of us out there. Your support will help me clear previous debts so that I can continue my medical training. I will not forget the generosity or kindness of those who extend a helping hand.
Investing in Native education
I fully intend to repay your kindness and generosity forward when I am a practicing physician. I plan to establish a scholarship for a Native students at my undergraduate university, Bemidji State University. Additionally, I will make financial contributions to organizations seeking to support Native American and Alaskan Native students who are pursuing higher education. I believe strongly that education is one of the key ways we can help ourselves and each other as we work to move past the generational traumas that afflict us.
Thank you for hearing considering making a donation. Your support means the world to me, to us. Even a small donation can help us build momentum for this campaign. Please give what you can.
Thank you!
