As of late despite all that is going on in the world I have been so grateful for the blessings in my life, both big and small. I know all of you can relate.
Today I came across a man in Oxnard California at the shopping center on the corner of Rose and Gonzalez outside of Walgreens. My girlfriend rolled down the window and we gave him some money. What really caught me off guard is that he began to cry. He was in a wheelchair, with only his left leg. When we handed him the money he said in Spanish that he longed for a different life.
As we drove away I felt as though I did not give him enough so I turned around and got out of my car to speak with him. He was just so humble. He is undocumented with no family in the area. He is a diabetic and anemic. He suffers from chronic ulcers which do not heal properly due to his diabetes. He mentioned that he managed to go to the doctor sometime back and they wanted to amputate his left leg which has an excessively large ulcer but he wants to find an alternative way to treat it. He stated that he is not lazy and has attempted to find work, even in the fields, but most places reject him because of the state he is in.
Somehow he still manages to obtain food, which he was very thankful for.
The words he used to describe himself were depressed, and suicidal. He said, with tears in his eyes, that often times he feels like there is nothing left for him in this world
It shattered my heart and I told him I would try to find a way to help him. He said he is usually at that shopping center. I would love to get him a place he could stay for the night with a nice bed to sleep in. Ultimately I would love to get him some funding so he could find alternative treatment for his leg and have a permanent place to stay so that he can be comfortable. If every person in the community donated one dollar, I believe we could make this come true for him.
I just want him to know that there is ALOT left for him in this world, beginning with kindness.
