Hi, my name is Mike, I am a disabled vet who is no longer employable due to my heart condition. My social security application is complete, but am waiting for a case decision expected within 3-5 months. I am recovering from a pacemaker defibrillator surgery.
Here’s my story: I suffered a major heart attack on May 22, 2018. This was a 100% blockage of the LAD which is also known as a widowmaker heart attack. Only 1 in 15 survive this, yet I’m still here. It took me 10 months to recover exceeding doctors’ expectations. I returned back to work only to suffer another cardiac event on July 13, 2019, causing me to pass out behind the wheel. However, I’m still here. It’s not surprising they let me go for my own safety and the safety of those on the road with me. This left me out of work due to my medical condition. Surgery followed in August 2019 implanting a heart monitor to determine what was causing my heart issues. Everything seemed to be going well under my cardiac team’s care, until May 2020. They implanted 2 stents, which is when they found my heart was beginning to fail due to Junctional Bradycardia. This is when my cardiac care team decided to do another surgery implanting a pacemaker/defibrillator. Doctors insist that I not work during recovery from ischemic cardiomyopathy & “CAD” coronary artery disease.
Between my medical condition, not being able to work per doctors’ orders, caring for my 78 year old mother, the different filing process for support resources and my bills stacking up; everything has reached a level that is overwhelming for me. Due to Covid-19, her age & COPD, my mother hasn’t been able to return to work either. It is impossible for my mother and I to survive on my mere $75/month food stamps, her SSI, and 60% benefit from the VA.
Covid-19 has given me more time to create both a short term and long term solution. My mortgage payments are severely behind. If I can raise the $17,500 needed now and the $17,500 for the next 6 months ($35,000 total). This will give the resources time to process the long term solution.
