Help this Black & Indigenous Activist Survive

Peace,

Shéár Avory is a profound force in organizing on behalf of the TGNC community. Since the age of 13, they have been on the front lines fighting for an equitable future for those most marginalized. In their 25 years, Shéár has lived lifetimes. They have been touched by nearly every cornerstone of systematic marginalization, yet they've still managed to achieve major success despite it all.

Shéár Avory (they, them) is the first Black and Indigenous trans person to campaign for public office in New York State, running for State Assembly in New York’s Hudson Valley. Prior to their historic run for office, Shéár was the Lead Statewide Community Organizer the New Pride Agenda, worked as a Policy Associate and Organizer at the ACLU, advocated for an equitable New York City as a Policy Associate at the Office of the New York City Public Advocate, and previously served then former Vice-President Biden as the 2018 Biden Fellow for LGBTQ Equality at the Biden Foundation in Washington, D.C. They’re credited for co-founding the nation’s first and only Trans Wellness Center in Los Angeles, California; successfully advocating for the repeal of the Walking While Trans Ban in California and New York; achieving the passage of New York State’s Raise the Age for Homeless Youth Act, Safe Haven For Trans Youth & Families Act, Less Is More, and the Equal Rights Amendment; securing an unprecedented three-million dollars in the 2022 and 2023 New York State budgets for TGNC New Yorkers along with the historic passage of the Lorena Borjas Trans Wellness & Equity Fund; and for contributing to a National PREA Resource Center policy for young people in juvenile detention.

Unfortunately, the road towards equitable policy has been paved with immense hardship for this young leader. Recently, Shéár has been forced to concede from their Assembly District race due to how unsustainable the campaign process has been for them. They are now facing eviction and need our support. Shéár is intent on serving their communities, but simply cannot continue to pursue such things while their material conditions and health are constantly being threatened.

Escaping the realities of poverty, incarceration, and homelessness is easier said than done for anyone who has experienced such things. Shéár feels themselves slipping back into this racist, systematic nightmare, and we cannot in good conscience sit back and watch this happen to such an important pillar of our community. We've relied on the sacrifice and tenacity of this person for the equitable gains in policy that we experience today - it's our turn to return the favor. Shéár needs us now more than ever. They need to secure a place to land so that they may heal, and come back to us stronger.

This fund prioritizes the immediate needs of nearly 4 months of missed rent payments, moving and storage fees, sustainable housing, food, and healthcare until they are able to build back what they've lost from nearly 8 months of strenuous campaign efforts. Any amount helps! Let's fill this leader's cup so that they may continue fighting the good fight.
