On a cold, foggy afternoon, a group of LA animal activists stopped at a gas station in Earlimart, CA on our way to a retreat. While there, we met a beautiful husky begging for food. When we asked around, we were led to a nearby abandoned lot — filled with dumped items, an old trailer, and around 20 dogs living without adequate care.
When we returned, we met Thelma, who looks after the lot alongside another caregiver, Dora. They shared heartbreaking stories of dogs regularly abandoned there — many sick, injured, or left to die — with no resources for veterinary care.
Recently, several very ill puppies had been dumped at the lot. We offered to take them to the vet immediately. Despite emergency treatment, the puppies were suffering from severe infections and parasites. One by one, their conditions worsened. Rufus was likely suffering from distemper and was humanely euthanized. Ms. Thang passed away unexpectedly. Pumpkin declined rapidly and was also put to rest.
This devastating situation has left us with significant emergency vet bills — and a renewed commitment to help the dogs still living on the lot. We want to support Thelma and Dora by improving conditions, providing veterinary care (including spay/neuter), and ensuring the dogs receive consistent food and medical attention.
We’re asking for help to cover emergency and follow-up veterinary bills, ongoing medical care and sterilization, and food and basic supplies for the dogs. Even small donations make a real difference. Thank you for helping us turn this tragedy into relief and care for dogs who’ve been forgotten.
