Hi everyone,
My husband and I found two dogs at Fish Lake Campground off Highway 96 on Friday, 6/17/22. They were wandering around without collars and came up to us looking for pets and food. A woman at the campground said the dogs had been there for a few days, and she had asked everyone she could find but no one claimed them. It appeared they had been dumped at the campground. Both were malnourished, lethargic, covered in ticks, and injured. We decided to cut our trip short and take them to our home in Eureka.
The dogs made it through the night and on Saturday, we took them to the vet. The puppy, who we've named Theia, has a broken front leg. The vet said the injury was about four weeks old and was already healing. The vet seemed optimistic that she could grow and regain some use of it, but that surgery may be necessary depending on how things go. We're happy to know that she's not in pain, although she is still limping. The big guy, who we've named Titan, turned out to be heartworm positive and has a broken K-9 tooth. The vet said he needs to start heartworm treatment soon, as it is fatal if left untreated. Both Theia and Titan need to be spayed/neutered.
Our goal for Theia and Titan is to help them become the happy and healthy dogs that they deserve to be. We plan to keep them at our house through their treatments and until they find their perfect forever-homes, which, who knows, maybe that's us! We want to take on the responsibility of caring for them because we're concerned that the county shelter would euthanize them due to the amount of medical care that they need. And, local rescues are at capacity.
* EDIT: As of 6/21, I spoke to Humboldt County Animal Shelter. They assured me that animals are not euthanized strictly due to medical issues or cost. They encouraged me to bring Theia and Titan to the shelter. They would hold them for 4 days and if no one claims them, they would move forward with medical treatment. My husband and I could then apply to foster and possibly get them back, although there is no guarantee. As of now, we've made the decision to continue to keep Titan and Theia together with us at our house. I appreciate the information that the shelter provided me.

To help these babies, we need to find a way to pay for their vet care. We're asking for help to raise at least $5,000. All donations will go directly to Theia and Titan's vet bills. They will be cared for at Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital in Eureka. I've included pictures of the estimates and a spreadsheet breakdown of the total bill.
*EDIT: An adjustment was made to Titan's neuter/tooth extraction and has reduced the cost! Woohoo!
*Additional info: Theia's front left ulna and radius bones are broken. One of the bones has healed, the other one is still "floating" and the vet recommended we not put a cast on it at this point. She limps but is putting some weight on it and we've been assured that she is not in pain. We will be following up with the vet after she puts on some weight about what to do next, if there is anything to do.

Theia and Titan are incredibly sweet, which might prove that dogs are loyal and trusting, sometimes to a fault. I shudder to think about what they've been through so far. I hope they can get well and live happily ever after.
Thank you so much for your help!
Jessie & Daniel
*EDIT - DIRECT VET HOSPITAL DONATIONS ARE ACCEPTED: If you'd prefer to donate directly to Myrtle Ave Vet, I spoke to them today and they said to call them at (707) [phone redacted] and give them my name, Jessica Kelly, and say that you'd like to donate money towards TITAN's account. Right now, Theia doesn't have any pending bills at Myrtle Ave as she will be going to Humboldt Spay Neuter to be fixed and we are in the process of figuring out what to do about her broken leg (she may need an orthopedic specialist).
