Me and my family are currently struggling with a fiberglass disaster. I recently decided to wash my mattress cover. There was a zipper around the whole bed, allowing the cover to be removed easily. I washed and dried it, then carried it through the home to place it back on bed. Later I started itching and felt like my skin was on fire. I threw out my clothes and showered. My coworker suggested it could be fiberglass. I looked it up and there is in fact fiberglass in some mattresses to serve as fire resistance. So when I removed the cover and washed it, the fiberglass spread all over. It’s in washer, dryer, floors, walls, closet, clothing, bedding, on bed frame, couch, rugs, toys, and my car. The more research I do the more serious this situation becomes. Fiberglass is a skin irritant and can also be inhaled, which can be a problem for people with allergies. My husband, our baby, and myself have been cleaning as much as we can but it’s still everywhere and we are very uncomfortable most of the time. I joined a support group to get opinions of others that have gone through this and the steps to remove fiberglass are intense and time consuming. We currently have no savings and live pay check to paycheck. We need to basically evacuate the home, turn off HVAC, throw away the mattress, then begin cleaning. We will need to pay for many things including hotels, cleaning equipment and/or company, babysitters for our son, new bed and bedding, clothing, possibly a new couch, rugs, a car detailing, possibly a cleaning of HVAC system. It’s truly a mess I never thought I would have to deal with. My family and I have been through a lot and would not typically ask for help like this but in this situation I feel helpless and am asking for support. Even if you can give a dollar, it will help. Thank you.
