Clent & Makenzie’s Displaced Living Expenses
During winter storm Uri, in the afternoon of Feb. 16th, a water pipe burst in the attic of our Denton, TX rental home, collapsing the kitchen ceiling and damaging the floors in our living room, main bedroom, and home office. In short, our family of four (we have a nine year old and a five month old) found ourselves displaced.
On the 26th, I was informed by the contractor that we should expect repairs to take eight weeks. Eight more weeks of displacement, after nearly two already. Also, eight weeks was not the contractor’s worst case scenario of up to twelve depending on availability of materials.
So far, between a hotel room and booking a home through AirBnB, we have spent over $6,000 for a place to live that will get us through April 9th. But that’s only six of the eight weeks, and our renters insurance policy will only reimburse us for half of those expenses.
We applied for FEMA, but have been denied, pending possible later approval once we are still displaced after our insurance claim. But we don’t know if we will be approved or for how much.
As it stands, minus what insurance will reimburse us for, we are already out $3,000 and unsure how much this will end up being. So, we our asking now for $4,000 to help us get in front of this situation. And if we are able to receive funding from FEMA or any other programs, we will take any funds that exceed our housing needs and donate that amount to the Denton Bail Fund dentonbailfund.com
Thank you all!
