Help the Wilson and Leck family

Saturday, June 19th. A day to remember for the Wilson/ Leck family.  David (30) and Meaghan (30) were due to get their first Family official portraits taken with their 10-day old baby Bonnie. The photographer was unwell and cancelled the shoot, allowing the new parents some extra special morning time with their girl. After lying in bed with Bonnie, playing around until she was due for her next feed, David got up to start the day and collapsed, semi-conscious and severely short of breath.

David’s mother (Sue) arrived whilst 000 was being organised – she was there to take her Father to the doctor.

Soon after Paramedics arrived David went into his first cardiac arrest; CPR was performed by Sue and Paramedics before further medical assistance arrived on scene. Together, they revived him.

Upon arrival at hospital an Emergency Team attempted to intubate him to secure his airway, however that was unsuccessful and led to a hypoxic cardiac arrest. To treat this, they did an emergency tracheotomy and took him straight to theatre to secure his airway. Scans showed a large blood clot in his pulmonary artery. A second surgery to medicate and dissolve the clot was successful, however still leaving him fighting for his life in ICU at Westmead Hospital.

Sunday, June 20th. There were concerns that David may have sustained brain damage due to the hypoxic arrests. As they could not take a newborn into an ICU ward, they played recordings of Bonnie crying – now spending more of her life in the hospital than anywhere else.
Meaghan and Sue spoke to him all day, making sure he knew what he was fighting for and needed to pull through. By the evening David was able to keep his heart beating without assistance.

Monday, June 21st. Phenomenal progress. He was controlling his blood pressure and had movement in all of his limbs and head. More videos of Bonnie got him to open his eyes, and by lunch he was waking up over his sedation. Doctors said, that him showing purposeful movements is the best we could hope for – BUT David had other plans! Waking up more throughout the day, he had managed to communicate to Meaghan and mouthed “hello” and “I love you” to her.

Tuesday, June 22nd. David refuses to go down. He’s been putting up such a fight that Doctors decided to help him out and slowly turned down his sedation to bring him out of his coma! By the end of the day the sedation was completely turned off, he became very responsive, and was officially moved from a critical condition to a stable condition – these words came with a whole new relief and his family could finally breathe – although knowing he is not out of the woods yet and he has a very long journey ahead.

Wednesday, June 23rd. David has been weaned off all medication that only a few days ago was keeping him alive! He was alert and communicating with his mouth and hand movements. He is now breathing by himself with minimal assistance every now and then.

It has now been 6 days in ICU and without seeing his little girl! His family have made collages of photos and updating a sign with daily photos of Bonnie, placed directly in his eyesight so that he will still wake up to her and Meaghan.

In the coming days he will be assessed for brain damage, although his progress is looking very positive. He will also be assessed in order to determine his rehabilitation needs.

Whilst David is making incredible progress, his stay in hospital is currently indefinite. In this time, their families are reaching out for your
support to help Meaghan and Baby Bonnie through it all, to help by reducing one less stress.

David has just finished two weeks of paternity leave to be there for Bonnie’s first weeks and is now on unpaid leave whilst Meaghan remains on maternity leave. With endless hospital visits in the foreseeable future as well as raising a baby, we are giving David, Meaghan and Baby Bonnie as much support and love as we can.

With an indefinite ending to their journey and the numerous financial expenses they are facing; David and Meaghan’s family are reaching out for your support. It would be wonderful if you can help this lovely couple and Baby Bonnie get through this stressful time, so they concentrate their energy and love on helping David with his recovery and staying positive.
