Hi my name is Erica and I’m raising money for the victims of the fire that tore through the historical manor at 2 Main St, Hinsdale NH earlier this week. Thankfully there are no published casualties however the lives of everyone inside has been changed forever. The money from this collection will go directly to purchasing items for the families involved. Here’s the full story:
In the wee hours of Wednesday morning fire broke out at the house, built by Charles J. Amidon , (1827-1900), on the corner of Main/Canal Street and Chesterfield Rd. Despite that best efforts of the Hinsdale Fire Department, and other area departments, the building appears to be a total loss.
Mr. Amidon was one of Hinsdale most influential citizens in the mid 1800’s. He partnered with Frederick Boyden and a Mr. Bishop to build and operate a woolen Mill in 1840. The mill later was known as the Hinsdale Woolen Mill. He was one of the best known business men of the state, having held many public offices such as senator, representative, town treasurer, selectman and postmaster, director of an Electric Light Co. and President of the Hinsdale Savings Bank.
Although it was reported in the Keene Sentinel that the house was built in 1900 it was actually built in the mid 1800 by Mr. Amidon. The town tax records would show 1900 because in the winter of 1900 the Town Hall burned to the ground and all of the town records were lost to the fire. Any records created after that fire would show 1900 as the start date.
