Hi, my name is Latasha Trusty. I’m a wife, a mom to two amazing children (Journey, 8, and Justin, 7), and until recently, I was a full-time employee at ChristianaCare. But in late 2022, my entire world changed. I woke up one morning completely blind — with no warning signs or symptoms.

Doctors diagnosed me with glaucoma and cataracts in both eyes, and I underwent over 21 procedures just to bring back a small amount of my vision. Despite my determination to return to work, in February 2024, I was officially diagnosed as legally blind and could no longer continue my job of seven years.

As if that wasn’t enough, in December 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage 5 renal disease. By January 2024, I began dialysis. And then—just yesterday—I received the call: A kidney and pancreas were available. My husband, Mike, dropped everything, took unpaid leave, and drove us from Wilmington, DE to the University of Pennsylvania for surgery.

Today, I woke up with a new kidney and a new pancreas—a second chance at life.

But healing comes with a price—emotionally, physically, and financially.

Mike is now on unpaid leave to take care of me and our kids while I recover. We’re a family of four with no current income, juggling monthly bills, travel back and forth from Delaware to Pennsylvania for ongoing appointments, and the mounting costs of recovery.

We’re not ones to ask for help lightly, but right now—we truly need it.
