Every summer in Ryder Lake, just outside Chilliwack, BC, something remarkable happens.
Thousands of tiny Western toadlets, each smaller than a dime, emerge from their breeding wetland and begin a dangerous journey across the road to reach their forest home. It is one of nature’s amazing wonders—and every one of these vulnerable toadlets matters.
For many years, the community has stepped up to help the Ryder Lake toads . In 2015, we built a special toad tunnel under the road. Each summer, temporary fencing is installed to guide the toadlets safely toward the tunnel. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, local landowners, and supporters, thousands of tiny lives have been directed to a safer path. Without this protection, many would be crushed by traffic before they ever reach the forest.
For more than 25 years, the Fraser Valley Conservancy has worked to protect the natural places and species that make this region so special. This year, funding opportunities for conservation initiatives like this have been significantly reduced, and we are struggling to secure the resources needed in time.
For just $1 you can help roughly 10 toadlets cross the road safely! We anticipate over 70,000 toadlets in this year's migration.
If we cannot raise enough funds by July 10th, one of our most urgent and beloved conservation efforts is at risk. Without protective fencing in place, thousands of tiny lives could be lost in a matter of days. Your donation will give future generations the chance to witness this incredible migration and know that our community cared enough to help.
This wetland is an important Western toad breeding site in a rapidly developing region. Western toads are a species at risk in BC, and they play an important role in supporting healthy ecosystem. When toads thrive, wetlands and forests are healthier too.
This matters for more than one species.
Five other amphibian species also rely on this same wetland and tunnel to move between winter forest habitat and breeding pond.
Your donation today will help cover the materials, coordination, and on-the-ground support needed to keep this life-saving project in place. Any funds raised beyond this urgent effort will go directly toward other species at risk conservation work in the Fraser Valley. Please give now to help tiny toadlets make it safely home.
