Hi, my name is Alexandra Suarez, and I am starting this fundraiser for my father, Alex Suarez, who is currently fighting for his life.

My father and I have always been incredibly close. He has been my biggest support my whole life and then did the same for my daughters. Last July, I moved back to New York after living in Miami for many years so I could be closer to him as he got older and his health began to decline. Since then, we’ve spent every day together: having coffee every morning before work, him driving me to the train, and picking me up every afternoon. Our routine means everything to me. During Easter week, my father traveled to Ecuador for vacation. While there, he suffered severe food poisoning that caused him to vomit blood. He lost nearly three liters of blood, became unconscious, and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Shortly after, his heart could not handle the trauma, and he was placed on life support. At this moment, he remains in critical condition. He is connected to machines to support his heart, has a breathing tube, and has now developed pneumonia. The doctors are doing what they can, but the ordeal is far from over. One of the most devastating parts of this situation is how medical care works in Ecuador. Because my father is an American resident, he has no medical insurance coverage there. Every single day, my family and I are required to pay out of pocket just for him to continue receiving care. His cousin, who is with him in Ecuador, must physically go to the pharmacy every day to buy the medications he needs in order for the hospital to administer them. If payment is not made, they will not treat him.

The medical expenses have become overwhelming, and I have completely exhausted my savings. His siblings and I are running out of options, and this crisis does not appear to have an end in sight yet.

Daily hospital and ICU expenses

Emergency surgery and life‑support care

Medications purchased daily from local pharmacies

Ongoing treatment as he continues to fight for his life
