Help the StewartNothwang Family Beat Brain Cancer

Donation protected
William is a father of two brave little girls and husband (over 18 years) to an amazing, tireless wife, Laveta.  They’re both children of parents who’ve served in the armed forces and have chosen careers to give back: William worked on design of miniature sensors that help protect soldiers from danger and Laveta works as an epidemiologist for the Henry Jackson Foundation working towards reducing the impact of infectious diseases in the military population through collaborative clinical research.   They are a family rooted in love, faith and hard work.

Last year, their world was turned upside down.  In early November 2020, William began suffering from escalating moments of confusion; an MRI revealed a massive glioma on the frontal lobe which prompted immediate transport to the ER. The next day, he underwent an emergency craniotomy to remove a mass the size of a baseball.  However, doctors were only able to remove a small portion, and from lab tests William was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer which led to a second craniotomy a few weeks later to attempt to remove the remainder.  In the second craniotomy, William became temporarily paralyzed and was admitted to inpatient rehab, where he acquired (and recovered from) COVID-19.  Although he missed his family through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, William made a strong recovery from surgery and was able to return home.

The ordeal puts William and Laveta in uncharted territory. William has been, and continues to be, unable to work while Laveta has limited leave remaining.  Chemotherapy and radiation began in February 2021 and as William continues his treatment the medical bills are coming in.  With two little ones – Simona (8) and Sybille (4) – and managing 'normal' life during the pandemic, the stress is unimaginable.

This fund has been created for a simple reason: to help William and his family out.  Since this road ahead is unknown and daunting, the hope is that this will give them not only a financial boost but some peace of mind.  To be there for them in this or any capacity is a way to reciprocate the hope, strength and love they give to others.
