Help the Stamms Protect Their Purple Martins — and Their Rights

For 38 years, Andrew and Carol Stamm have welcomed one of America’s beloved songbirds, the Purple Martin, as they return from their long migration from South America to nest safely in their Harahan backyard. Their colony follows conservation practices supported by wildlife agencies—and for decades, it coexisted peacefully.

But over the past two years, the City of Harahan has pursued multiple prosecutions against the Stamms based on nuisance complaints. Despite efforts to work with neighbors—including professional pressure washing and other mitigation measures—the legal challenges have continued.

On March 25, 2026, the Stamms were found to be in violation of a local nuisance ordinance. They are now appealing this ruling to the 24th Judicial District Court—facing significant ongoing legal expenses as they continue to defend not only their colony, but what this case represents for Purple Martin conservation.

Importantly, the ruling did not require the removal of their Purple Martin housing. However, the case is far from over, and its outcome could have broader implications for communities and conservation efforts across the country.

As the birds return from their 5,000-mile migration, the future of this long-standing colony remains uncertain.
