As some of you may know, Skylar was in an accident on Friday, May 20th that resulted in him being air-lifted to the University of Iowa Burn Treatment Center.
The care team at the U of I Burn Treatment Center is one of the best in the country, so we know Skylar is in great hands. In the few days he's been there, Skylar has required a feeding tube, daily bandage changes, as well as a skin graft surgery on Monday night, 5/23/2022. This surgery brought high hopes to the family... Most of the skin graft was needed on his right arm and hand and about 2/3 of his left arm. They also sprayed his face with his skin cells to assist with the healing, and he did not need a blood transfusion! Skylar has remained high-spirited and still has his great sense of humor through it all, giving a little relief to his family.
The morning after his surgery, the nurses reassured Skylar's parents, Renae and Brian, that he is doing great. He has been up and moving around and sitting up in the chair. He has also been doing physical therapy to help with the recovery process. They are even talking about releasing him to go home on Wednesday!
Skylar's parents have been by his side during this extremely tough time, while also trying to manage their time to be at home with his 8-year-old sister Zoey - who is devastated by this news of her brother.
Because Renae and Brian are commuting to and from Iowa City, and will have to continue to do so, they are unable to work as much. It goes without saying that it will be a while before Skylar can return to work as well.
By donating to the Sondgeroth family, you will be helping with Skylar's recovery, medical bills, and all other expenses that are guaranteed to come.
Your generosity is sincerely appreciated and we will do our best to keep the updates coming!
