Hello! My name is Katie and I’ve been friends with Jess (Towle) Smith for nearly thirty years and was lucky to meet Dan, her husband, shortly after she did!

If you know Dan, you know that he’s the world’s most easy-going, affable guy who likes to keep personal matters private. He never seeks attention and maintains his privacy, however, since many people near and far have asked to help, we decided this could be a great option.

On December 12, 2022, Jess took Dan to the ER in Bismarck to address severe abdominal pain. Very, very long story short, Dan was admitted immediately and within two days, he was moved to the ICU. He received full-court press care there for three weeks and honestly, the hospital prepared Jess and their young daughters for the absolute worst while they muddled through the holidays. Thankfully, Dan the man had others plans!

Shortly after the new year, Dan made serious progress and they were able to move him out of the ICU to receive a different level of care in the hospital. He has a very long road ahead of him; he needs to heal with the help of comprehensive therapies, care, and the most precious commodity of all: time. Until they can move him home, Jess is managing the family, his care, insurance claims, work, and everything in between. Their families, friends, and extended McQuade’s family have been incredibly supportive with all things ranging from snow removal to hot meals, but the many burdens and stresses persist. At this time, Jess and Dan's care team are determining the next best steps. Dan will likely have to be moved to a rehab facility in Fargo, which will certainly be a hardship for Jess and the girls, but will be the best course of action for Dan.
