Help Gabe's Home Wheelchair Accessible

Gabe’s Journey – Update

Gabe continues to push forward in therapy, showing resilience and strength each day. We’re so proud of his progress and the determination he brings to every step of this recovery journey.

As part of supporting his needs at home, we’re working on making the bathroom wheelchair accessible to improve safety and daily comfort. This kind of modification is essential, but it does come with added costs.

We’re incredibly thankful for all the love, prayers, and support we’ve received so far. If you’re able to help by donating or sharing Gabe’s story, it would mean so much to our family.

With heartfelt gratitude,
— The Rubio Family

Looking back to the beginning of Gabe's Journey:
December 14, 2024, Gabe suffered a severe stroke + brain hemorrhage, that left him with brain trauma. At first, the doctors told us there was no hope he would come out of this. God had other plans for Gabe, and he is alive and doing well.

December 2024 (ICU - Hospital)
• Gabe was in critical condition and under ICU care.
• Underwent several procedures including shunt placement and feeding tube.
• Initially non-responsive and in a vegetative state.
• Slowly began responding to commands and mouthing words like “I love you.”
• Sat up for the first time with assistance.

January 2025 (PCU - Hospital)
• Transferred out of ICU to the Patient Care Unit.
• Breathing on his own with oxygen support when needed.
• Started physical therapy (PT); placed in a sitting position and responding more regularly.

February 2025 (Skilled Nursing Facility)
• Moved to a skilled nursing facility closer to home.
• Started working with Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Therapy (ST).
• Feeding tube and trach removed.
• Regained some mobility and began using a wheelchair with assistance.

March 2025 (Encompass Health Rehab)
• Transferred to Encompass Health for intensive daily therapy.
• Saw significant improvements—stood with help for the first time.
• Alertness, posture, and muscle strength improved.
• First time wearing clothes and leaving his hospital gown.
• Emotional milestone: first hug from family since hospitalization.

Mid-March 2025 (Home)
• Gabe returned home on March 17 (Day 93).
• Began outpatient therapy at Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS) in Fort Worth.

April 2025 (Ongoing Recovery)
• Due to the toll of 3-hour round-trip travel, therapy at CNS was paused and waiting for at home therapy to begin.
• Gabe continues at-home therapy and exercises guided by Jinny.
• Notable improvements: better posture, communication, strength in right leg and upper body, and first knee bend in the left leg.
