After a scary few days filled with pain, anxiety, and testing, Craig Ruane (32), was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021. Guillain-Barré Syndrome or GBS for short is a rare autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own nerves.
Craig is suffering from severe nerve pain in his back and a loss of muscle strength in his legs resulting in decreased mobility and need for assistance to get around; along with numbness of his extremities. GBS can occur after a viral or bacterial infection and in some circumstances after vaccination. In Craig’s case he has no recent history of either, so his cause is unknown.
A course of IVIG (antibodies) treatment has been started and will continue for 5 days. At that point Craig will continue with physical and occupational rehabilitation to regain lost strength and help heal any damaged nerves.
The length of recovery is unknown, but can often take several months, even up to a year for a full recovery. Fortunately most people with GBS do make a full recovery eventually.
At home Craig has a wife, Kelsey, a one and half year old son, Julian, and a black lab, Bailey.
Kelsey works as a hairstylist and plans to adjust her schedule as needed to take care of her husband and aid in his recovery process.
At this point in time, any type of support for the family is greatly appreciated!
