The Purr Project needs our community’s help. (All amounts here are in MXN PESOS!)
After Hurricane Polo brought torrential rain to the Puerto Vallarta area Friday and Saturday, floodwaters overwhelmed The Purr Project on Saturday, September 26, causing extensive damage throughout the shelter.
The Senior Center flooded. The bodega where food and essential supplies were stored flooded. And the home of the family who lives on-site and cares for our cats 24 hours a day was also flooded.
The Purr Project currently cares for nearly 300 cats and kittens.
Thankfully, at this time we are not aware of any cats or kittens who lost their lives in the flooding. But the damage left behind is devastating.
We lost cat food, litter, medications, supplies, toys and every single cat tree at the shelter. Areas of the property need to be repaired and rebuilt.
The family who lives at The Purr Project and dedicates their lives to caring for these animals also suffered significant personal losses. Floodwaters entered their home, destroying furniture, electronics, clothing and other belongings. Their children lost beds, clothing and more.
On Sunday, September 27, a team of 10 volunteers led by Renee Sproles-Fovel of Shoreline Realty Group and Wendy North McDuffie of Sapphire Social and Navigating Vallarta came to the shelter to begin the enormous cleanup effort.

What they found was a disaster.
We have started cleaning, but cleanup is only the beginning.
The Purr Project now needs to restock food, litter, medications and basic supplies for nearly 300 cats. We need to replace cat trees, bedding, toys and equipment. We need to repair damaged areas of the shelter. We also want to help rebuild the on-site family's home and replace some of the basic necessities they lost.
Just as importantly, we need to make the property safer before the next major storm. Funds raised will help purchase construction materials and support improvements, including retaining walls and other flood-mitigation measures designed to better protect the shelter and the family's home from future flooding.
We simply do not have the funds to do all of this on our own.
Every donation will help us rebuild, restock and continue caring for the nearly 300 cats who depend on The Purr Project every single day.
If you cannot donate, please share this fundraiser. Sharing it with friends, family, animal lovers and the Puerto Vallarta community can make an enormous difference.
The cats survived the flood.
Now we need your help rebuilding their home.
