Help The Perreault-Steubing Family Get a Van

Donation protected
The Perreault-Steubing family is enduring a stressful and arduous time as they seek grant support to offset the high cost of replacing their fifteen-year-old wheelchair ramp van which no longer functions. This has been their only vehicle and without it they are unable to transport Julius, Alice’s son, who lives with severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy. This month they’ve had to rely on wheelchair accessible public service vehicles and friends to get Julius to medical appointments and Alice’s five-year-old daughter to Kindergarten, which opened on-site a week ago for hybrid learning. The strain of having no vehicle is taking its toll on the family. Alice missed her daughter’s school parent-meet-and-greet as well as her daughter’s first day of live Kindergarten. She said she feels forced to choose between her children now that she cannot transport them together.

Public service vehicles with wheelchair access are restrictive with the number of their riders and have limited service areas. This means Julius, who typically visits his father living outside the area, has no transportation to get to him.  Julius is medically fragile. He requires significant durable medical equipment available at all times, that was typically carried in the van.  Julius is fully dependent for all daily living tasks including tube feedings. He absolutely cannot travel, even locally, without a medically trained assistant. His mother is his primary care taker and has utilized no additional home nursing throughout this Covid pandemic to protect Julius’ health.

Community support could have a positive impact on Alice’s efforts to receive a grant from the Regional Center to modify a vehicle she plans to purchase. At this time the Center has denied her request twice stating that public service vehicles are adequate for her family. She is awaiting a Hearing and says she has never in all her life of caring for Julius felt so BOUND.

You can help demonstrate the importance of having an adapted vehicle for this family with a donation to support their efforts.
