Restoring Hope: Aid for The Owens Family
Dear friends, family, and compassionate supporters,
As many of you know, the Eaton Fire has left a devastating mark on Altadena, tearing through our community and leaving destruction in its wake. Tragically, my grandmother Carolyn Owens' home was among those lost, reducing a lifetime of memories and cherished family history to ash.
My grandmother, who has been courageously battling Lewy Body Dementia, is lovingly cared for by my mother and uncle. Her condition spares her from fully grasping the gravity of this loss—but for our family, the heartbreak is immeasurable. Not only have my uncle and grandmother lost all of their possessions, but our family has also lost irreplaceable pieces of our legacy—photos, keepsakes, and the tangible markers of a life well-lived.
We are in the process of working with FEMA and our insurance providers to address structural losses and insured needs. However, these resources do not cover everything, leaving urgent and uncovered expenses that require additional support.
The funds raised through this campaign will specifically address:
- Specialized memory care services: Ensuring my grandmother continues to receive the care she needs during this challenging time, covering costs that are not eligible for FEMA or insurance assistance.
- Immediate support for my uncle: Covering personal recovery needs, such as clothing and household items, that are not included in FEMA’s assistance programs.
- Temporary housing expenses: Supporting housing-related costs that extend beyond FEMA’s coverage, such as security deposits, furniture replacements, or extended accommodations while permanent solutions are arranged.
- Support for my mother as Power of Attorney: Providing financial relief for the extensive non-reimbursable administrative responsibilities she manages as my grandmother’s POA. These include coordinating with FEMA and insurance providers, organizing my grandmother’s memory care, and handling travel and logistical costs to meet her caregiving needs.
To ensure transparency, we are keeping detailed records of how donations are used. These funds will focus solely on addressing non-insured and uncovered needs, ensuring there is no overlap with resources provided by FEMA or insurance.
Your generosity will ease the overwhelming financial burden our family faces, allowing us to focus on rebuilding our lives in a way that restores hope and dignity.
If you’d like to donate directly or have other ways to contribute, please contact me and I’ll be happy to share additional details.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, compassion, and support. Together, we can help my family recover and honor the legacy we’ve lost.
Altadena Strong. Altadena Always.
