Hi! WHS Soccer Team would like to raise some funds for the Oetzel Family. Dani has been the "Team Mom" and a huge support to the soccer team.
From Dani:
It was the end of October 2024, Halloween to be exact. I started experiencing strange symptoms in that people were talking to me in song. It sounded very melodic anytime anyone spoke to me or even while watching TV or scrolling through TikTok it sounded like everyone was singing. I had my husband take me to the ER that day.
Moments after arriving at the ER, at Miami Valley South in Centerville, I was in an MRI machine getting my head checked. I thought, truly, that maybe I was just finally going crazy. Moments later a doctor stood over me and informed me that it wasn't good news and I infact had a mass on my brain. He told me I'd be admitted to Miami Valley Main Campus in Dayton for further testing. 7 Long days later I was going under anesthesia for the first of now two brain surgeries. The surgeon removed as much of the tumor as she safely could leaving me intact with my ability to speak and allowing me to keep all of my memories. I'll be forever grateful to her for that. A sample was sent off to be biopsied and the results were devastating. I was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma in my right temporal lobe. A little over a month later I would start treatment. Chemo and radiation were challenging but from December 16th-February 3 I successfully completed 33 radiation treatments and a full round of a chemotherapy drug called Temodar. In April I went for a follow up MRI and the results from that were another gut punch. There had been a recurrence or a part of the treatment area may have been missed during radiation therapy. I would undergo my second craniotomy on May 9th. During this surgery they were able to remove more of the tumor safely and even some healthy tissue in attempt to starve the cancer giving it nowhere to spread to.
We were fortunate enough to own 2 homes and once we got the diagnosis we decided now was the time to sell the home we were renting out. We made the decision, informed the tenants, gave them a couple months free rent to be able to create a fresh start for themselves. What we were met with was nothing short of shocking. The amount of work that would have to go into getting the house ready to sell would prove to be more than we bargained for. Not to mention during all of this our twin boys turned 16. We had plans in place to be able to make sure we could provide them with at least one vehicle to share once they got their license and we were on track to make that happen. Until the medical bills started coming in and the home repair costs started adding up. We did everything right, we had Health Savings Accounts that were able to cover a large portion of the medical aspect, but home repairs were directly out of pocket. We were not making a profit off our rental property. We were charging exactly the mortgage for rent. Maybe an unwise decision, we were just trying to help and not looking to benefit from it in any way.
Which brings me here now.
