Help The New Journal Publish Great Journalism!

In the two years since early 2020, before the pandemic arrived, The New Journal has suffered approximately $10,000 in losses. This is nearly a 25% drop in our general-use funds. The reason for this drop is simple: it’s very difficult to sell advertisements during the ongoing pandemic. Local businesses are struggling, and Yale organizations are hosting fewer, more restricted, in-person events — neither of them have much reason to pay us for advertisements.

Our expenses at TNJ are minimal but unavoidable: by printing five issues each year full of some of the best undergraduate writing at Yale, we spend approximately $10,000. We normally cover our printing costs with a balanced mixture of advertisements and donations. Before the pandemic, TNJ maintained just such a healthy balance. In the fall semester of 2019, our ad sales totaled $3,090 for the first three issues of the academic year. So far this semester, after two issues, our ad revenue amounts to $810. It is our goal to return to our pre-pandemic balance of ads and donations, and we predict that we will be able to sell more ads when the pandemic eventually eases. There will be an end to this crisis. But until then, we badly need more donations to help us recoup our losses.

If you’d like to help us continue publishing great writing and training great writers, please donate to The New Journal today. Our fundraising goal is $10,000— the amount of money we’ve lost since the pandemic began. We are deeply grateful for your support.
