We are the Mounthawk Masterminds, a team of students from Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, and we are incredibly proud to have been selected to represent Ireland at the FIRST LEGO League Open International Championship in Greece this May 2026.
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a global STEM competition where students design, build, and program robots while also developing innovative solutions to real-world problems. Teams are judged on Robot Design, Robot Game, Innovation Project, and Core Values such as teamwork, respect, and inclusion.
Following an extremely successful All-Ireland Final, our team was chosen based on our outstanding performance across all four areas of the competition. Being selected is a huge honour and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Who We Are:
Our team is made up of seven students from 1st Year to Transition Year, all with a shared passion for STEM. Since September, we have spent countless hours designing, building, and programming our LEGO Spike Prime robot, while also developing an innovative project and growing as a team for this year’s competition.
Our Innovation Project:
This year, we tackled a real-world problem: how archaeologists safely explore tight, dangerous, or unstable excavation spaces.
We designed and built an Archaeology Access Rover, powered by a Yahboom Raspberry Pi, with a camera and sensors to explore these areas safely and send back live data. The robot was programmed using Python, giving us experience in real-world coding, robotics, and problem-solving.
The Opportunity:
At the Open International in Greece, we will compete against 56 of the top teams from around the world. The event includes robot games, judging sessions, innovation presentations, and collaboration with teams from different countries, making it an incredible learning and cultural experience.
Why We Need Your Help
While this is an amazing achievement, the cost of getting to Greece is significant. We need to fund:
- Flights
- Accommodation
- Competition fees
- Equipment and travel costs
We are actively fundraising, but we need support from our community to make this possible.
How You Can Support Us
Any donation, no matter how small, will help us represent our school, community, and country on the international stage.
If you’re unable to donate, sharing this page would mean so much to us.
Thank you for supporting young students in STEM and helping us achieve something truly special.
Let’s get the Mounthawk Masterminds to Greece!
