My name is Crystal Moore, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my family during the hardest chapter of our lives. I’m a stay‑at‑home mom homeschooling our two special‑needs sons, ages 12 and 8, while also caring for our 12‑month‑old daughter. My husband, Micah, has always been our provider. He works as a senior HVAC service technician and has carried the weight of supporting our family with pride.
In early December, everything changed.
Micah began experiencing severe back pain that quickly became debilitating. Within days, the man who we looked to, to provide and carry our family was struggling just to stand. He became dependent on a cane, then a walker, and eventually was unable to get out of bed without help. Urgent care X‑rays revealed multiple degenerative disc issues, slipped and bulging discs, bone spurs, scoliosis, and a large cyst.
In January, after a neurosurgeon referral, an MRI confirmed that his back will require surgery. But what they found next was even more terrifying.
While imaging his spine, doctors discovered a critical and dangerous condition in his neck: severe thecal sac narrowing that is compressing his spinal cord. A neurological exam showed he has already suffered what may be permanent nerve damage in his arms and hands. The neurosurgeon told us plainly—this is emergent. A fall, even a small one, could leave him permanently paralyzed.
Because of the complexity and risk, Micah has been urgently referred to Harborview Neurosurgery, the best-equipped hospital in our state for high‑risk spinal surgery. While we wait for the surgical team to take his case, he has been referred to Kaiser’s spine and pain management clinics to help him cope with the excruciating pain.
His FMLA benefits have not yet begun, and our bills are piling up faster than we can keep up.
We are doing everything we can to survive this. We’ve applied for assistance, cut every expense possible, and are working with doctors to begin the process of applying for Social Security Disability. But with three children and no income coming in, we are drowning.
Our monthly rent is $2,085. Utilities, trash, and power/gas bills have pushed us to the edge. Our water has been shut off multiple times. Our family van was repossessed because we simply couldn’t keep up.
We are scared. We are exhausted. And we are asking for help.
This GoFundMe will go directly toward keeping our family afloat—rent, utilities, medical bills, and the basic necessities we need to get through this crisis while Micah awaits what could be considered life‑saving surgery.
If you are able to donate, share, or simply keep our family in your thoughts, it means more than we can express. Your support gives us a chance to stay stable while we fight for Micah’s health and our family’s future.
Thank you for reading our story and for caring during the most difficult time we’ve ever faced.
